About the Workshop
Wildfire: Human Behaviour and Evacuation Modelling GEO-SAFE Workshop

Attendance is Free of Charge.

This is the 7th GEO-SAFE workshop and the only GEO-SAFE workshop to be held in United Kingdom. This workshop will present the evacuation models developed and human behaviour analysis that has been performed in the GEO-SAFE project. The Workshop is organized within the Work Package WP2 of the European Project GEO-SAFE (H2020-MSCA-RISE project n. 691161). The key features of this workshop are:
  •  One day at UoG
  •  Main themes are -
    •  Role, requirements and capabilities of evacuation modelling in the planning and management of wildfires.
    •  Identification and calibration of human behaviour in response to wildfire.
    •  Development and application of Large Scale Wildfire Evacuation Models
    •  Embed evacuation simulation environment into a training environment.
    •  Future directions for wildfire evacuation modelling.
  •  Consists of:
    •  7 lectures
    •  3 discussion panels
    • 1 hands on session using webEXODUS
    •  1 Demonstration session showing recent developments in coupling wildfire, pedestrian and vehicle models

GEO-SAFE Forest fires (also referred to as wildfires and bushfires) are an annual occurrence in many parts of the world causing massive damage to the natural and built environments, endangering lives and forcing the large-scale evacuation of entire residential areas and business and industrial facilities. In the EU and Australia, every year thousands of square miles of forests and other regions burn due to wildfires. These fires result in significant economic and ecological losses, and often, human casualties. The threat posed by wildfires is not restricted to countries with hot climates. A large number of wildfires occur in Great Britain every year.

The Geospatial based Environment for Optimisation Systems Addressing Fire Emergencies European GEO-SAFE (H2020-MSCA-RISE project n. 691161) project, co-ordinated by FSEG of the University of Greenwich, is a four year project (running from May 2016 to April 2020) with 17 partners from 7 countries (United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, France, Switzerland, Netherlands and Australia) with an estimated project cost of €1,386,000.00. The aim of GEO-SAFE is to create a network enabling the two regions to exchange knowledge, ideas and experience, thus boosting the progress of wildfires knowledge and the related development of innovative methods for dealing efficiently with such fires.
